The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Viewpoint: Commemorate “a Brighter Day

Sometimes, we all need a pick me up in the morning. It doesn’t matter how successful you are or how much money you’ve got, sometimes it’s hard to find motivation to begin the new day.

You know how it goes: You wake up on the wrong side of the bed, before opening your bleary eyes to an email from your boss asking if you can work more hours tonight. Then, you stagger into the kitchen, burn your tongue on hot coffee before finding out there is no warm water when you take a shower. And then it’s time to get stuck in the morning traffic. URGH. The way you start the day sets the tone. If you start it in the right way, the rest of your day will be wonderful. Get off to a bad start, however, and you can be sure that the rest of your day will be one long struggle. To make sure that each day is bright, reading inspirational quotes in the morning is a great idea. Inspirational quotes can motivate you and flood you with brightness, lifting your spirits even when you don’t feel at your best. If you’re in need of some inspiration every morning, here are out top 10 favourites:

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 gams. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

    – Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan is NBA’s most famous son. Even people who don’t watch basketball know exactly who he is and what he’s done in life. Not too long ago, he became the first NBA billionaire, and now owns the Charlotte Hornets. Despite his fame, and despite the fact that he’s a legend all over the world, Michael Jordan is not as infallible as you might think. In fact, he’s just as human as you are. And just like you, he makes mistakes. He fails now and then. It’s okay to fail. The key is that you see failure as a chance to learn and do better next time around. It’s all about how you deal with it.

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.”

    – Helen Keller
What is your heart telling you today? Listen to its melody, listen to what it wants – and for once, follow it. It knows how to brighten your day.

“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.”

    – Wiliam Arthur Ward
Smile and the world will back at you. Nothing lifts your spirits more than a smile. It makes a grey day blue and fills you with radiance and positivity.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover.”

   – Mark Twain
This is a great quote I read each time I’m faced with a potentially life-changing decision. I don’t know about you, but my greyest days are those where I’ve backed away from risky moves, played it safe and remained in the same position – and later regretted it. When I take the risks, my day is ten times brighter.

“The mind is everything. What you think you become.”

    – Buddha
The Buddha was one of the wisest men to have ever lived. This quote sums up how our mood can affect out emotions and state of mind – and consequently the way our day pans out. The mind and body are connected. If you tell yourself you can’t do something, you won’t do it. Conversely, if you tell your mind that you can do this, you will do it! It’s all about putting mind over matter. If you dwell on negative things, your life will be swamped with negativity. If, however, you practice positive mental attitude, your day will be so much brighter. Try it!

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

    – James Dean
I get dismayed when my friends say these three words to me:  “What’s the point?” They ask the question whenever they think it’s futile to even try doing something. After all, the gods are against them. It’s just not true. While there are things you can’t change, there are lots of things you can change. If you can’t get a job today because MS Excel isn’t on your skill set, learn Excel tomorrow. Make the changes you can make.

“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”

   – Woody Allen
Woody Allen is an American comedian who seemingly makes a joke about everything. But they say that behind every joke is an element of truth, and Allen is the master at revealing the truth of things. And he’s absolutely right about success. The only difference between a super successful woman such as Oprah Winfrey and yourself is that Oprah took action. She decided her life wasn’t good enough and something had to change. So, she showed up. She was halfway there already! There is no talent that exists which you cannot have. The world is there if you want it – you’ve just gotta show up, darn it!

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then, do what’s possible; and suddenly you’re doing the impossible.”

    – Francis of Assisi
Make small goals that help you to reach your bigger goal. Don’t corners and mistakenly believe you should be able to have everything all at once. Take your time and make incremental improvements. Eventually, you will get there.

“Practice kindness all day to everybody and you will realize you’re already in heaven now.”

    – Jack Kerouac
Practicing kindness to others doesn’t just make them happy – it makes you happy, too.

“If you don’t make your own plans, someone else will put you into theirs.”

    – Tony Robbins
Tony Robbins is a public speaker, psychologist and motivator and he hit the spot so much with this quote that I ended up handwriting it onto a sheet of paper when I was 21 and pinning it to my wall. Even though I’ve since moved house, I still have this quote pinned to my wall. It’s just so on point. If you don’t get a move on today and make your own life-plans, you’re going to sleepwalk into someone else’s plan. You’re always going to be the bridesmaid and never the bride. You’ll be forever making someone else money while you struggle to pay the bills. Brighten up your day by creating goals and plans. Give yourself something to work for and break from the grip of others. They’ll have to learn how to succeed without you.
